Some people recommend watching Chinese TV programs to improve your listening skills.

Even though I rely on the English subtitles as a crutch, it is a big thrill when I can understand a sentence or even a phrase.

But why invest 40 to 60 minutes of watching something when you can watch a commercial instead?  Watching commercials is a good way to learn Chinese and laugh at the same time. I came up with this idea when I ran across this commercial for the AGM X2 cell phone.  Here it is:

My teacher in Wuhan, China said she’s never heard of the AGM brand name, but she definitely thought it was funny.

Key words:

  • 老婆  (lǎopó)- “honey, dear“ , how a Chinese husband calls his wife “honey/dear”.
  • 老公  (lǎo gong) – ”honey, dear”, how a Chinese wife calls her husband “honey/dear”.
  • 消息 (xiāoxī) — news, information
  • 现代医学技术(xiàndài yīxué jìshù) — modern medical technology
    • 现代 – (xiàndài– modern
    • 医学 – (yīxué) – medical
    • 技术 – (jìshù)- technology
  • 发达 (fādá)- advanced, developed
  • 高技术 (gāo jìshù) – high-tech
  • 数字化 (shùzìhuà)- to digitize
  • 意识 ()consciousness, awareness
  • 完整地转移了 (wánzhěng dì zhuǎnyíle) – transferred completely
  • 轻松 (qīngsōng)- relaxed, light
  • 景色 () – scenery,view, scene, landscape
  • 防水 (fángshuǐ) – waterproof
  • 防摔 ( fáng shuāi) — shock proof
  • 别担心,我不但防水,我还防摔呢。(Bié dānxīn, wǒ bùdàn fángshuǐ, wǒ hái fáng shuāi ne) – Don’t worry, I’m not only water-proof, but I’m also shock proof.
  • 你别把我扔下去啊!(Nǐ bié bǎ wǒ rēng xiàqù a!) –  Don’t throw me away!
  • 江底的泥沙 (jiāng dǐ de ní shā) –  sand bottom/river bottom
