“Du Chinese” lets you read on the go

I enjoy reading books from Mandarin Companion and Chinese Breeze, but I don’t always have time to read a book or even a chapter from one of their wonderful books.   But I can manage to read a few short paragraphs from my cellphone.

That’s why I’m glad to talk about “Du Chinese”.

“Du Chinese”  has something for every learning level

Whether you are a newbie or an advanced student of Chinese, Du Chinese has something for you to read.   What I like about their reading lessons is that they range from one phone screen for Newbie and Elementary, to up to three phone screens for the higher levels.

Pinyin feature

You can read the texts with or without pinyin.   If you want an English translation of a sentence or clause, simply touch the sentence on your phone screen and it appears at the top.

Helps you with HSK

If you are preparing for the HSK, you can select an option that color codes HSK vocabulary.  If you want to know the HSK level for an underlined word, simply touch that word and the definition appears along with the HSK level designation.

Word List and Flashcards

Du Chinese Flash Card

You’ll definitely encounter some words you don’t know as you read.  Du Chinese allows you to save those words into a word list.  Its flashcard mode not only test you on words, but it has another option to show how that word is used in a sentence.

Native speaker audio

If you want to hear a native speaker read the text,  click the arrow icon at the bottom center.  Hearing the text while reading it is a fantastic way to reinforce what you are learning.

“Du Chinese” is also available on your computer

A nice feature about Du Chinese is that anything you can do on your cellphone can also be done on your computer.

The Du Chinese “Free-mium” Model

Du Chinese is a business and if you want to read all of their stories and articles, you’ll need to subscribe to their services.  Du Chinese employs a “free-mium” model.  Their most recent lessons going back about a week are free, so you have a great chance to try out all their features.

If you are really serious about improving your Chinese reading, they have subscription models for one month, six months and a year that allows you to read their entire collection.
